Commission acts to protect Europe from cyber-attacks and disruptions

(30 March 2009)Electronic communication services and networks provide the backbone of European economy. 93% of EU companies and 51% of Europeans actively used the internet in 2007. However natural disasters, terrorist attacks, malicious human action and hardware failure can pose serious risks to Europe's critical information infrastructures. Recent large scale attacks on Estonia, Lithuania and Georgia proved that essential electronic communication services and networks are under constant threat. Preparing Europe to act in case of major disruptions or attacks is the goal of a new strategy proposed today by the European Commission.

EU Commissioner calls on ICT industry to reduce its carbon footprint by 20% as early as 2015

(30 March 2009)In a video posted on her website this morning, Viviane Reding, the European Union's Commissioner for Information Society and Media, asked the information and communication technologies (ICT) industry for intensified efforts for tackling climate change. She warned that the measures in place so far to meet the EU's objective of cutting energy use by 20% by 2020 will only improve energy efficiency by 13 percent". Therefore, better use should be made of information and communication technologies (ICT) to reduce faster the carbon footprint of households in Europe.

Telecoms Council, Brussels, 31 March 2009

(30 March 2009)The Council of EU Telecoms Ministers will meet in Brussels, 31 March 2009. The EU Telecoms Ministers will adopt conclusions on achieving an accessible information society, as well as discuss how communications technologies can boost the EU's economy. Ministers will also share information on the European 112 Day and the use of ICT for energy efficiency. The Commission will be represented at the Council by Viviane Reding, EU Telecoms Commissioner.
