Challenges for FTTB/H in Europe

This international conference will focus on critical issues related to the creation of a high-speed internet access infrastructure for Europe (FTTB/H - Fiber to the Building / Fiber to the Home). It addresses issues such as technology, deployment & operation, regulation, investment & financing, national fibre broadband strategies and business cases. The conference aims to provide insights into the experiences, expectations and perspectives of leading international network operators, national regulatory authorities, representatives of the European Commission, government officials, investors, equipment manufacturers and independent experts.

EU-funded project leads marathon observation with world-sized telescope

(16 January 2009)17 telescopes in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America have been conducting a nearly continuous 33-hour observation of three quasars (celestial objects with incredibly high levels of energy emission) on 15-16 January. The observation is part of a demonstration at the opening event for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA 2009) in Paris.

The Networked Enterprise & Radio Frequency Identification unit of the European Commission's Information Society and Media Directorate-General organises this information day. Full information on the research challenges of objective 1.3 of the new ICT Work Programme for 2009-2010 will be given. The event will also help researchers, interested in the upcoming calls, to find potential partners. Registration is open and free of charge.

Economic and social impact of software and software-based services

(Deadline: 02/02/2009)

The purpose of the study will be to identify the potential economic and social impact of software and services within the future Internet; the elements that are determinant for growth and competitiveness; and the actions that need to be taken to implement them. The study is expected to provide a substantial result, directly implementable through policy actions, after considering the state of the software and services sectors throughout the EU.
